Nepal is entering a new phase of its digital transformation. Digital payments, online services, e-commerce, information technology, digital platforms, artificial intelligence and the growing movement of digital talent are changing how Nepalese citizens connect with markets, institutions and the world.
But the digital economy is not only an economic story.
It is increasingly a diplomatic story.
The way Nepal participates in the global digital economy will influence its trade relationships, investment opportunities, technology partnerships, data governance, cybersecurity, digital rights and international standing. Diplomacy, in turn, can help Nepal build the international partnerships and policy environment needed to unlock the potential of its digital economy.
This is the conversation DDI wants to bring forward.
Why digital economy needs diplomacy
Traditional diplomacy has largely focused on territory, trade, security and political relations. Today, digital technologies are creating new areas of international cooperation and competition.
Questions around data, artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, cross-border digital services, cybersecurity, digital taxation, technology standards and online platforms increasingly cross national borders.
For Nepal, this creates both opportunities and challenges.
Nepal has a young and increasingly digitally connected population, a growing technology sector, globally distributed Nepali talent and significant potential in IT-enabled services and digital entrepreneurship. Yet the country also faces challenges related to infrastructure, skills, regulation, access to international markets, investment, data governance and coordination between different stakeholders.
The question is therefore not simply:
“How can Nepal become more digital?”
A more strategic question is:
“How can Nepal use diplomacy to become a stronger participant in the global digital economy?”
What could digital diplomacy do for Nepal?
Digital diplomacy can connect Nepal’s domestic digital ambitions with international opportunities.
It can help Nepal:
- attract technology and digital investment;
- promote Nepal’s IT and digital services internationally;
- connect Nepali startups and entrepreneurs with global markets;
- build technology partnerships with governments, universities and the private sector;
- participate more effectively in international digital policy discussions;
- advance responsible approaches to AI and emerging technologies;
- strengthen cooperation on cybersecurity and digital resilience;
- protect digital rights and promote an open, inclusive digital environment; and
- mobilize Nepali professionals and diaspora networks as global digital bridges.
This requires moving beyond the idea of diplomacy as government-to-government engagement alone.
The digital economy involves government, business, academia, technology communities, civil society, young people and citizens.
That makes digital diplomacy a potential platform for a much broader national dialogue.
From dialogue to action
DDI’s December 2026 dialogue on “Digital Economy and Diplomacy in Nepal” is intended to bring these different perspectives into one conversation.
The objective is not to produce another discussion that ends when the event closes.
The objective is to identify practical ideas that can be developed into initiatives, partnerships, research, policy recommendations and international engagement.
We want to explore questions such as:
1. What should Nepal’s digital economy diplomacy look like?
2. Which digital sectors can give Nepal the strongest international economic advantage?
3. How can Nepal attract global investment and technology partnerships?
4. How can Nepali digital talent and diaspora networks contribute to international engagement?
5. What policies are needed for cross-border digital trade and services?
6. How should Nepal approach AI governance and emerging technologies internationally?
7. How can digital rights, cybersecurity, and national interests be balanced with innovation and openness?
8. What can universities and young people contribute to Nepal’s digital diplomacy?
These questions are deliberately open.
We believe the most useful ideas may come from people working outside traditional diplomatic circles.
A call to action
Nepal does not need to wait for the future of digital diplomacy to be defined elsewhere.
